The aspects impacting negatively on the railway transport are:

Flexibility:

The goods can be sent by railway depending on the availability of a convoy to deliver the goods. Such kind of convoys are formed in the departure station and arrive into the arrival station from where they are shunted. No optimization of the wagons’ delivery is actually performed.

Velocity:

Since the deliverables by means of the railway are linked to the availability of a convoy, the delivering timings are too long for the clients especially when the departure station and arrival station are too far from each other and from the delivering place and when the railway infrastructure doesn’t exist in the delivering place.

Costs:

It is convenient when the departure station and the arrival station are far from each other. In fact for short travels or for little ports the costs are not so competitive.

The new system overcomes the above problems and introduces a new methodolgy of using the existing railway network infrastructure.

In this patented solution the goods transport request is able to manage the goods trasnport itself forming the suitable convoys, contrary to the state of the art where the convoys’ availability produces goods transport request.

To be realized, the new system doesn’t need intervention on the actual railway network infrastructure. It uses a “smart wagon” or “smart carriage” and a system for the communication between a central controlling and managing system, a system on the convoy, a system on wagons and a system in the stations

Since the system is completely automated there is no need of operators in the stations, so reducing the costs of the management of the service.

The new system allows:

  1. To form the convoys by means of autonomous wagons controlled by a computer system with no need of operators.
  2. To use a railway station for the pick-up or the delivery of railway wagons with no office, no operators.
  3. The use of the existing railway is optimized and used on demand.
  4. No intervention is made on the existing railway network if it has automatic shuntings managed by a remote control system.
  5. It is necessary to realize a new wagon or to upgrade the traditional wagons in order to be drivable by the central system.
  6. The implementation of a computer system and of different systems: the central system, the system in the station, the system in the wagons, each of them interfacing and communicating with the computer system of the owner of the railway network.
  7. The new system doesn’t impact on the planned convoys based on the traditional reailway system..
